Questions people ask

Is LegalVanguardian a law firm?

No. LegalVanguardian is a technology platform where independent, NJ-licensed attorneys list their services at flat, published prices. You choose your attorney; your legal relationship — and your payments for legal services — are directly with them. The platform is never your lawyer and never gives legal advice.

Are these real, licensed New Jersey attorneys? How are they vetted?

Yes — and not every attorney who applies gets in. Before an attorney can list here, we verify they are licensed and in good standing with the New Jersey bar (checkable in public bar records), review their public disciplinary history and background (court records, published decisions, reviews), confirm real NJ family-law experience, speak with past clients — both the references they provide and, where possible, other clients they've represented — and require a written commitment to the client-first rules on this site: flat pricing, per-case conflict certification, and nothing-without-you transparency. Many of our attorneys live outside New Jersey, which is fully permitted (NJ eliminated its physical-office requirement in 2013) and is exactly why their prices are lower: their cost of living is lower, not their qualifications.

Do I pay the platform anything?

No — never. Using the platform is completely free for you: browsing and comparing attorneys, the cost forecast, booking your free consultation, and your case file. The only money you ever spend is your attorney's flat fee, paid directly to your attorney at the price you approved up front. And during our founding period, the platform is free for attorneys too — it exists as a mission to make fair representation possible, not to profit from your hardest year. One rule will never change: we never take a percentage of your case, and we never charge you anything.

How can prices be so much lower?

Three reasons. First, structure: flat-fee stages eliminate the padded hours and open-ended retainers that inflate traditional bills. Second, vetting: committing to fair, transparent pricing is a condition of joining this platform — attorneys who nickel-and-dime are removed. Third, overhead: our attorneys practice across New Jersey and beyond, many remotely now that courts handle much of the process by video — so you pay for lawyering, not downtown rent.

What if my case goes to trial — can a remote attorney handle that?

Remote attorneys handle documents, strategy, negotiation, and virtual hearings — about 80% of a typical case. For in-person courtroom days, our network includes New Jersey-based attorneys who appear with you for a flat per-day fee.

What does "you own your case file" actually mean?

All your documents, deadlines, filings, and your attorney's running strategy notes live in a standardized digital file you control. You never have to ask a law office for your own paperwork, and if you ever change attorneys, the next one gets up to speed from your file in about an hour instead of billing you to start over.

How do I know my attorney will actually fight for me?

Three ways. First, incentives: flat fees mean your attorney earns nothing extra by dragging your case out — resolving it well is the only way they profit. Second, accountability: you hire stage by stage and rate your attorney after each stage, so they re-earn your business at every step, and attorneys with a pattern of poor reviews are removed from the platform. Third, independence: your attorney certifies in writing — at engagement, and again once your judge is assigned — that no relationship with the judge or the other side's lawyer could work against you.

Can things happen in my case without me knowing?

Not here. Platform attorneys follow the Nothing-Without-You rule: you attend every case management conference and court event where client attendance is permitted; your attorney doesn't communicate with the judge outside your presence except where court rules require or permit it (such as emergency applications), in which case you're informed immediately; and you're copied on every message sent to the court and opposing counsel. In traditional practice, lawyers often meet with judges and opposing counsel while clients wait outside — on this platform, that doesn't happen.

What if I run out of money mid-case?

You only ever commit to one stage at a time, and every stage's price is fixed before it starts. If you need to stop after a stage, your case pauses — your file, timeline, and strategy stay intact and yours — and you resume when you're ready. Nobody gets dropped mid-motion.
